Artworks
For all your senses
In addition to its musical programme, Fuuga displays artworks through a dedicated art initiative. Works are located both inside and outside the music centre, inviting not only event audiences, but everyone who visits Fuuga to experience them.
Sculpting sound
In 2023, the City of Turku launched an open art competition for works to be created for Fuuga’s main foyer and musicians’ foyer. The winning artwork was a three-part sculptural composition by Johanna Suonpää, rooted in the musical form fugue (fuuga). In the main foyer, Kaiut (echoes) follows the music centre’s curved architecture, its reflective metal surfaces mirroring the shimmering River Aura. In the musicians’ foyer, Soiva sydän (resonant heart) gives form to the heart’s expressive force and passion, while Legato accompanies and extends the theme.
Movement and light
The creators of Fuuga’s outdoor art were selected through an open portfolio call. The commission was awarded to a working group formed by Tommi Grönlund and Petteri Nisunen. Movement and light play a central role in Fuuga’s artwork. The rotating piece is inspired by the music flowing through the music centre and the River Aura alongside it.
The art initiative also includes Soihtu (torch), a fountain sculpture by Terho Sakki from 1975, located in front of Fuuga. The sculpture returns to its place from before Fuuga was built.
All artworks are part of the City of Turku’s art collection, curated by WAM (Museum of Contemporary Art).
